Squirrel skin was the first instrument of payment in Finland. ‘Raha’, the
Finnish word for money, originally stood for ‘squirrel skin’. On many
occasions, taxes were paid in squirrel skins. The skins were also used to sew
warm clothing. In Scandinavian mythology, Ratatosk is a red squirrel who runs
up and down with messages in the world tree Yggdrasill and gossip. Tyyri, daughter of Tapio, is the ancestress of the squirrel in Finnish folklore.
